What we repair

Ceramic, porcelain, composite, enamel

Ceramic and porcelain basins chip at the rim and around the taps, where things get dropped and where a heavy tap has been over-tightened. The glaze is hard and thin; beneath it the body is porous, which is why a chipped basin stains around the damage within months.

Composite and resin basins scratch and dull rather than chip. They respond well to resurfacing.

Enamelled cast iron pedestal basins — common in Edinburgh's period flats and increasingly sought after — are worth restoring for exactly the reasons a cast iron bath is. The fixture is better than its replacement.

Matching the suite

The reason a basin repair goes wrong

A basin sits next to a bath and a WC. If it is repaired to the wrong white, you have not fixed the basin — you have drawn attention to it.

Colour is mixed on site against the adjacent sanitaryware, not just against the basin. In a period Edinburgh bathroom where the suite has aged together over sixty years, that matters more than anywhere.

Where a bath and basin are both tired, doing them together is cheaper and produces a far better result than doing one and living with the mismatch. Ask us about it.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Do you have to remove the basin?

No. It is repaired in place. The plumbing is untouched.

Can you change the colour of my basin?

Yes. A full resurface can take a basin from avocado or almond to white, which is the most common request in Edinburgh's 1970s and 80s bathrooms.

Is a chipped basin actually a problem?

Beneath the glaze, ceramic is porous. A chip lets water into the body, which stains and, over time, weakens. It also catches. Repairing it early is straightforward.
